Minneapolis Mayday Parade Will Take A Year Off To Regroup

The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, which organizes the event, has announced it will take a year off to restructure the parade, making it more inclusive for artists and audiences of color. The parade had become too big to stage on its own. The year-long hiatus is intended to address structural issues, including a history of marginalizing and appropriating artists of color. While this break goes beyond funding, this year’s parade had a net surplus of $50,000, highlighting the event’s popularity. The Heart of the Beast has been working with consulting firm Imagine Deliver to determine how the theater, its signature event, and its home can survive and evolve.
